REALITY CHECK

As you know our book is NOW at the printers and it was a bit of a feat to get everything done by our deadline. So, while my head was buried in the book, my son grew. One day my mom was here taking care of the kids, my son came running downstairs so excited because they were going outside to pick Fall leaves for a craft project they had planned. I looked up and said “go up and change your pants, those are way to short for you to wear.”

With tons of enthusiasm, laughter and the biggest smile ever he looked down at his pants and replied, "No mom, you don’t understand, I get to be just like Nanna in her Capris.”

So the very day we were done and the book went to the printers we headed of to ‘Please Mum' to fix the "boy in Capris", get a hair cut...and now he looks like a boy again. My husband is very happy. Sometimes, I realized, I need to be just a mom!

Follow these guidelines for safe trick-or-treating:

Use nontoxic face paint instead of a mask. If a child must use a mask, make sure he can see and breathe easily. Costumes should be made of non-flammable material. There should be a reflective band or tape on the costume and/or accessories so the child is easily seen, especially by cars.

Keep costumes short enough that kids won't trip on them. Accessories should be made of plastic, foam board or cardboard, with no sharp edges or points.

Use treat bags with handles so kids can keep their arms free. Use flashlights to light your way, not candles or torches.

Kids should never eat candy before a parent has examined it. Parents should check candy to ensure the wrapper has not been tampered with. Treats not commercially wrapped should not be eaten.

A parent or older teen sibling should accompany younger children. Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves.

Parents or teens, not children, should hand out candy at home. Trick-or-treaters should walk in groups of no more than four or five kids to make it easier for the adult to keep track of them. Know the adult your child is with. Only go to homes that have porch lights turned on. Don't enter strangers' homes or get into their car no matter what the offer or what they ask. A well-known ploy is the "lost pet" trick, tell your children not to listen or help any adult except for those they truly know.

Use sidewalks - don't cut across lawns.

GHOUL WEB SITES!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, have you got your child a costume yet? Old Navy and The Children's Place have inexpensive and easy costumes in all sizes...

Off the top of my head, two fun, well-established Calgary costume shops you can visit are: The Costume Shoppe in Inglewood, and What's In Store on Edmonton Trail. And for Edmonton, Halloween wouldn't be the same without a visit to Shirley Potter's!

Need a laugh? Peruse the selection of hilarious Halloween photos of Dogs & Cats

Have no idea what you or your kids can wear? Try the Costume Idea Zone!

If you can imagine it, the Fright Catalogue sells it!! (Site contains realistic scary/gory props; please use your discretion when sharing this site with children.)

Have you ever wonder from where Halloween originated? And you desired some not-so-light reading at the same time: History.com's History of Halloween. Also Wikipedia.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

START A NEW TRADITION...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When it comes to bizarre local Halloween traditions, few communities can match Des Moines and its 50-year-old Halloween ritual of "Bad Joke Night".

In most places, the Halloween tradition goes like this: The kid says, "Trick-or-treat." The homeowner gives him candy.

In Des Moines, the kid says, "Trick or treat." The homeowner says "What's your trick?" Then the kid tells a simple joke like this:

Why didn't the skeleton cross the road?
He didn't have any guts.

Whether or not the homeowner is amused, the kid gets candy.

A mushroom walks into a bar. "You'll have to leave," the bartender says. "We don't allow mushrooms in here." "Why not?" asked the mushroom. "I'm a fungi."

Why did Dracula visit the blood bank?
He needed to make a withdrawal.

Why not have your kids do this "something different"? You will have good laughs learning the jokes together.

GIVE A TREAT, GRANT A WISH

A child's face that lights up as she get dressed in her costume. Houses decorated with jack-o-laterns, goblins and bats. Laughter in the streets as the kids go door to door trick or treating.

Halloween is season for fun, a season that everyone should enjoy - even kids who have to grow up too soon because they face life threatening illnesses.

Mars Canada Inc is partnering with the Children's Wish Foundation to make TREATS = WISHES. You can help. Mars Canada Inc. will donate a portion of the proceeds from specially marked children's wish packs toward helping to grant the wishes of these at risk kids. Last year, Mars Canada donated $100,000 to the Children's Wish Foundation and helped with granting the almost 900 wishes of seriously ill children across Canada. This year, help grant even more by purchasing these specially marked packs at major retailers near you including: Walmart, Zellers, Loblaws, A&P, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sobey's, Overwaitea, Safeway, Westfair.

Thanks for your support. Pass it on!
