International Year of Astronomy

International Year of AstronomyMay 2, is International Astronomers Day and where are the best places to go? The Telus Centres in both Calgary and Edmonton.

This year over 140 countries are participating in the International Year of Astronomy - a celebration marking the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the telescope. Join TELUS World of Science - Calgary, the University of Calgary and the Calgary Chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada as our experts collaborate to offer over 300 astronomical events throughout the year. Search and find exciting astronomy events in Calgary at www.astronomycalgary.com.

And in Edmonton they are also celebrating, they have on loan a new 16" telescope that is controlled by an external computer that runs the Satellite Tracking software as well as major astronomy programs, like Starry Night Pro. The Be a Star program recipients will be able to see their stars with the push of a button. So why not buy Mom a star for Mother's Day and take her to see the BIG ONE. For more information on activities and show times click here.

What child doesn't like looking into the stars, and can you imagine the "O" face they will make.

Strollers sought for young moms

A growing number of young mothers are trapped in their homes because they can't afford a common but expensive four-wheeled device: the baby stroller. Youth justice advocate Mark Cherrington has been seeking stroller donations for the ihuman Youth Society, an organization that helps at-risk youth and young mothers. He says Edmontonians have recently donated to the cause but there is still a need for more.

"Because they don't have strollers, their mobility has been greatly affected by not having the ability to take their toddlers and babies out for little things, like buying groceries."

Strollers can range from $50 to $800 or more, depending on differences in size, wheels, fabric and other features and doesn't always fit into the budget.

To donate a stroller, old or new, call Cherrington at 780-415-1384 or go to the ihuman Youth Society at 10231 95th St.

Green Ribbon of Hope:
Wear your Ribbon with Pride.

Green Ribbon of Hope

This year Child Find Canada Inc. is launching its eighteenth annual Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign. This Campaign, which runs for the entire month of May, raises awareness of the issue of missing children.

Each year in Canada, thousands of children are reported missing. The Green Ribbon, created in response to the abduction and subsequent murder of Kristen French, has become a symbol of Hope for their safe return.

Throughout the month of May, the public is encouraged to show their support and concern for missing children by prominently wearing the Green Ribbon.

If you would like to participate in the Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign, please order your Green Ribbon lapel pin now and wear it throughout the month of May. Click here to order.

Proceeds generated by the Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign will enable Child Find Canada and its provincial members to provide the essentials tools needed to protect, prevent, educate and locate missing and abducted children at no-cost to the general public.
