What a new hairdresser taught me!
Most people see a hairdresser like clockwork. It’s funny how particular people are about their hairdressers. I have a great one – Liz from Rock Star Trends – and have seen her for the past 6 years. Since having kids it’s been a bit more difficult to spend that leisurely time with her – but I know she is there for me.
Even my kids have their own hairdresser at Beaners Fun Cuts. Sometimes I use my kids' hairdresser, just because it is what works at the time.
But, after spending a month in Australia's hot sun & water, I had only been back 7 days before I had to be off to a girlfriend's wedding.
It was too late to schedule my regular hairdresser...so I took a brave chance.
And since my February goals were about finding and opening myself up to new experiences and opportunities...it was one of those bad hair days...you know the ones...“that’s it – it just needs to be cut!” While doing my errands and shopping in West Edmonton Mall with kids in tow, I popped my head into a salon and asked if they could fit me in? "Yes, Sam could do it, come on in." the receptionist smiled. She didn't even look at the schedule.
So pushing the stroller with one sleeping child by the big chairs we went to the sink. As we got to the sink and they wrapped the towel around my neck, my daughter awoke! With fear and panic in her eyes of "What is happening to my mom?!" both children clung to my legs, watching.
Back at Sam’s station I explained I "just needed a trim for a wedding.” As he cut my hair, he joked with the kids, asked them questions. I and got my hair washed, cut and styled and then Sam said, "We could cut your son’s hair so he looks smashing for the wedding." "Really?" I figured they would have had enough of squirmy kids and want us out ASAP.
My 4-year-old really didn’t want his hair cut, after all, where was the ball-room and the Jeep to sit in? But Sam gave him a great haircut as he squirmed around, then he offered to cut my daughter's, and that was a definite "NO" from me, as she has yet to have her first hair cut. He then offered to wax my eyebrows to which I said, "Really, you can fit that in also?" So we paraded back to the waxing room and I lay on the bed with both children at my legs, yet again and he did a great job of waxing. He made a few more offers of his services, but I knew my kids were at the end and so I thanked him so much for his efficiency and entertainment of the children.
What Sam doesn’t know is that he DID ME a HUGE FAVOR by offering his extra services to me. I got a great hair cut, my son looked smashing for the wedding and I felt prettier with my new eyebrows. Yes, he up sold me from a $50 trim to over $130 of services, but he truly helped me get the "To Do & Wish List” of things done.
So, you owe it to your customers to help them get their To Do List completed. How are you saving them time, money and frustration of getting their lists completed? How do your sales people deal with children in your store? This might be an opportunity to make you unique and stand out in a sea of services.
I triple-dog-dare you!
Teach your staff how and why they should learn to truly help...ask & see the needs of each individual customer...that will expand your sales greatly. And, when you truly help others, they begin to feel loyalty.
Yet another example of this.
Do you remember the Pepsi vs. Coke taste testing challenges that they ran for well over a year. Why did it stop? It was costly trying to convert new customers and they realized that if they could get you to buy just one more Coke or Pepsi, it would be more profitable than getting a new customer. So now you can profit from their expensive lesson.
