Careit Urban Deli: West Edmonton, Alberta
“The healthy side of take out” says Dave Higgs, one of the three co-owners. They are located deep in the west end of Edmonton’s just off the Anthony Henday Drive and Lessard Road. The first time I just happen upon them while rushing to an outing with the playgroup kids. With no time to feed the kids and not sure of what would be available at our destination. I saw the “Deli sign” and zipped in. Much to my delight they had one of the best chicken pot pies we have ever had and I have always thought the best were in New Zealand. The veggies and meat were so tender, and one pie was enough for me and my two young children. We couldn’t resist the huge carrot cookie, which had at least two or more whole carrots inside. So tender and moist it just topped of the lunch.
On my 2nd visit, I was rushing home to a house full of guests, last minute plans and nothing for dinner. I choose the chicken Carbonara, marinated shrimp squirs, some bruchetta, and a salad, and wha la, dinner was pretty much in the bag. Again, my meal was done to perfection and I just had remember where to go. The 4 co-owners experience ranges from Red Seal chef to sports coach, they want to make our lives easy and they have such an array of fresh farm products that are naturally and carefully prepared just as if I had done it myself.
With two small tables out front and limited bar type seating inside, you can enjoy it hot. And what do women care about the most? The BATHROOM! Well I would love this one in my own home, it’s that nice. I hope they set up the tables inside for out cooler weather and if they added a change table in it would top my list for us new moms with tiny ones. Their personality and cheeriness are sure to ad to your day; it’s like re-visiting my grandpa’s deli with a wide variety of deli meats, fine cheeses, a great take home menu as well as soup & sandwiches ready to eat.
